Leroy Lewis

Leroy Lewis was born and raised in Daytona Beach, Florida. He attended Campbell Street School where he set records in track, running the 100 yard dash in 9.4 seconds. In 1964, he graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina with a B. S. in Physical Education. It was there, in 1963, that he was initiated into Gamma Mu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi.

After moving to New York, Brother Lewis was drafted into the U. S. Army and he was quickly promoted to Sergeant (E-5). He served in the 173rd Airborne Division in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Later he returned to the states to train troops at Fort Carson, Colorado.

Following ten years of employment at General Motors in Tarrytown, New York, Leroy began working in special education at nearby Graham School in Hastings - on – Hudson, New York. He attended Western Connecticut State College and The College of New Rochelle, earning an M. S. degree in School Administration and Supervision.

During his twenty-five years at Graham School, Leroy served as Dean of Discipline, Dean of Students and Assistant Principal. As such, he was usually the first person to arrive and the last person to leave each school day. His firm but fair stance with his students and colleagues won him the respect of both.

Since his retirement in 2000, Leroy is enjoying his favorite interests and pastimes - computers, the stock market, cooking and dining out, traveling, music, photography and cars. Brother Lewis and his wife, Florence Lewis Rice, a retired English teacher, have no children, but they count the thousands of young people that they have taught, mentored and loved over the years as their own.

Kappa Alpha Psi holds a top place in Leroy’s heart and mind. He believes that Kappa fosters the achievements of young men through its brotherhood. He decries the hazing incidents that continue to plague the fraternity, strongly disowning hazing from his earliest days as a Kappa. He feels that hazing has nothing whatsoever to do with brotherhood, being a good Kappa or with achievement. In fact, he says, hazing directly contradicts the goals of the fraternity.

Brother Lewis received his chapter’s Service Award four times, a well-deserved honor for this steadfast man of few words who, rather than talking the talk, walks the walk!
