Brother Henry Helm exemplifies the Human Resources
Manager extraordinaire. Beginning with his initial
assignment with the Northern Natural Gas Company in
Nebraska and continuing with progressively more challenging
jobs with the General Mills, Inc., Helm eventually
achieved Vice Presidency status with Kraft Foods' Bakery
Division in Bayshore, New York.
Through more than 20 years of human resources experience
with the two premier consumer marketing companies (General
Mills and Kraft Foods), Brother Helm demonstrates strong
leadership skills in organizing, planning and implementing
policies, programs and practices that support business
strategies and profitable change management.
Brother Helm grew up in Mississippi where he developed
a profound love for hunting from his father. He continues
to enjoy the great outdoors and indulges his passion
by annually traveling to Canada in June with 14 other
outdoorsmen to fish for a week. In another such jaunt,
he is joined by another group of friends and travels
to Bismarck, North Dakota to hunt for pheasant in the
fall. And lastly, Brother Helm concludes his outdoor
activities for the year in November by deer hunting
in Rochester, Minnesota. It follows that our Brother
has amassed an impressive collection of guns as a result
of his adventurous endeavors. He also likes to tinker
with computers.
Brother Helm "crossed the burning sands" at
Alpha Mu Chapter, Lincoln University, Jefferson City.
Missouri,
and serves the chapter as its Vice Polemarch. After
graduating from Lincoln he pursued graduate study at
DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. In addition
to acquiring a strong background in human resources.
Brother Helm has also worked variously as a teacher
of social sciences and mathematics, as a counselor
in a Job Corps Center, and as an Assistant Director
of a Summer Jobs Campaign on loan from the General
Mills Company.
In the New Rochelle - White Plains Alumni Chapter
Brother Helm has served as the Polemarch, Vice Polemarch
and
has been a member of the Board of Directors. He has
also received the coveted "Kappa of the Year" for
his work in corporate life. Brother Helm received the
Black Achievers Award given annually by the Harlem
YMCA in 1981.
Brother Helm retired as a consultant with the Telcin
Group, coaching and advising corporate leaders as
they lead their organizations through a transformation
process.
He found this to be a very satisfying experience.
Helm is justly proud of his family, Linda, his wife
and children Lisa, Lorie and Kyle. He credits his
Uncle, T. C. Coleman, who was a member of Tau Chapter.
West
Virginia State College, with influencing him to
seek to join our fraternity.
When reflecting upon the present state of Kappa
Alpha Psi, Brother Helm recognizes a dilemma
- how can
we as Brothers preserve the traditions and values
of our
Founding Fathers within the context of our ever
changing and increasing complex contemporary
society. Helm
observes, at times, a lack of effective strategy
of the top leadership
level of our Noble Clan. Nonetheless, Brother
Helm believes that the legacy of our Founding lies
in
each of us, and we must live the true meaning
of the fraternity
through its fundamental purpose.
